Paying It Forward - It Starts With You!!

Cancer Survivor's are amazing...it seems to me that they are the ones that are always "Paying It Forward" or maybe they think of it as paying it back. Nevertheless, they are always joining groups to raise money to find a cure, donating money and time to others that have been diagnosed with cancer, and helping others deal with their diagnosis. They are thankful for the time they have and appreciate life for what it is. And they always seem to find someone who may have it a little bit worse than they do. I remember when I was accompanying Julie to her chemo treatments, she often said "someone always has it worse".

One of these amazing women I know is battling her second battle with breast cancer and is in her early 30's. Selena was diagnosed the first time when she was pregnant with her adorable little boy. She is undergoing chemo right now, is facing a mastectomy in the near future, and is still not sure if the cancer has metastasized to her lungs. But is she sitting around feeling sorry for herself? In a word "NO". She is planning to walk in the Breast Cancer 3-day Walk in Seattle. Please join me in helping her raise money for this cause by clicking on this link.

After you do that, please find it in your heart to start "Paying It Forward". Do something kind everyday!!! There are lots of ways you can do this. It doesn't have to cost money to make someone feel better. When we really look around us, finding inspiration is not hard at all. As a matter of fact, if we practice gratitude and the art of saying thank you regularly, appreciation of the smallest things becomes second nature.

  • Let someone in front of you at the checkout. If you have a basket full and the person behind you had a few items in their hands, let them in front of you. It won't take much longer and they'll appreciate your good deed.

  • Tell people who are close to you that you love them. It's important for those near your heart to realize what they mean to you. You never know what the future holds or how long they, or you will be around.

  • Hold the door for someone coming in behind you. It's a friendly gesture and you're sure to get a smile.

  • Offer to push an elderly person's shopping cart back to the store or cart corral, this will save them a few steps and they'll appreciate your kindness.

  • Pick up trash you see on the ground. It doesn't matter if you didn't put it there. Just pick it up and throw it away.

  • Do a good deed without recognition. Pay for the meal or a coffee for the car behind you in the drive through lane. Something simple like that means a lot.

  • If you are near someone who drops something, bend over and pick it up for them.

  • Compliment someone every day.

  • Leave an overly-generous tip for a waitress. It doesn't have to be extravagant, just enough that she will notice.

  • Do a chore without being asked. This is very much appreciated (trust me I know).

  • Donate money or time to a good cause – I recommend any Breast Cancer research organization of course, but any cause you are passionate about works. You don’t have to give a lot, give what you are comfortable with or donate your time. You will be helping someone and you will be rewarded for it in the future.

And please remember what Gandhi said, "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

Until next time, blessings to you and yours, Jan
